SDI 2-1/2 Day Open Water Diver Course (Beach & Boat)

(Faster Pace for Experienced Divers or Open Water Referrals)

This program is best suited for individuals who have previous experience scuba diving or for students needing open water checkout dives only. This program provides two dives off the beach and two dives off the boat.

Training Prerequisites

No prerequisite experience required. This is the first course you take to become a certified diver.


Age Requirements

The SDI Open Water Scuba Driver Course is for ages 15 Years and Older.

The SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver Course ages 10 to 14 years old.


Swimming Requirements

Participants must be able to swim. You do not need to be Olympic swimmers. You just need to be comfortable in the water and pass a basic swim test.


Waivers and Liability Releases

All participants will need to have a completed set of liability releases signed and dated prior to any in water training. Participants under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian signatures as well. No exceptions.


Course Duration

The duration of the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Course is between 1 ½ and 2 ½ days depending on the style of academics you choose. The course is performance-based so we do not like to rush. We want to make sure everyone is safe and fully understands the skills of the day. So there is a start time but never a set finish time.


Certification Process

Once a student has completed all of their performance requirements, we will process their certification card. Once processed the student will be a certified scuba diver.


Certification Card

As soon as we process your certification you will receive an email with a temporary card good for 30 days. Your permanent card should arrive within 1 to 2 weeks after certification. Don’t panic if you’re going on a trip. Once we process your card immediately you are listed in the system as a certified diver. This information can be accessed by any dive shop anywhere in the world. So even if you forget your card you can still dive.

Steep 2 Get Wet. Confined Water Training Dives

This takes place in a swimming pool or similar body of confined water, under the supervision of an SDI Instructor.

You will need to complete 5 confined water training dives before moving on to the open water environment.

Confined water training dive builds up skills that you have learned from the previous confined water dive. Confined water training dives can be completed consecutively in one day or over a few days.

Typical confined water training environments are pools, Lakes or beach.



Open Water Training Dives

The final step is to complete the required number of SDI open-water training dives under the supervision of your SDI Instructor.

Here you will apply what you have learned during your academic and skill-development sessions, while learning practical lessons that can only be gained through real-world experience in open water.

There are 4 open water training dives that will need to be completed before you can become a Certified SDI Open Water Scuba Diver.

Dive One: Skills demonstration, fun dive and reef exploration.

Dive Two: Skills demonstration, fun dive and reef exploration.

Dive Three: Skills demonstration, fun dive and reef exploration.

Dive Four: Fun dive and reef exploration. Each open water dive is approximately 1 hour, air permitting.


Depths and Restrictions after Certification

SDI Open Water Scuba Divers Ages 15 and Older Are certified to dive to a maximum depth of 18m/60ft

SDI Open Water Scuba Divers Ages 15 to 17 Will need to be accompanied during all Scuba diving activities by a parent/guardian, certified Scuba diver who is of legal age 18 + or a SDI professional

SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Divers Ages 12 to 14 Are certified to dive to a maximum depth of 12m/40ft Will need to be accompanied during all Scuba diving activities by a parent/guardian, certified Scuba diver who is of legal age 18 + or a SDI professional

SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Divers Ages 10 to 11 Are certified to dive to a maximum depth of 12m/40ft

Use of Personal Scuba Gear

New Gear

Stops do not go out and purchase Scuba gear from a third-party for your class. This could be an expensive mistake. New Scuba gear always requires minor adjustments and a safety inspection before it is used.

If you have purchased your Scuba gear from a third-party either online or at another dive center and it has a malfunction during your class. You will have to pay to reschedule the portion of the class you missed due to your equipment malfunction.

For this reason it is always best to buy your scuba gear from the dive shop you are doing your training through. Personal Scuba gear used in any of our classes must be up-to-date with service.

We do not accept equipment that is Out of service, unsafe or damaged to be used in any of our programs. Equipment must be serviced annually to be considered in service.
